Storm mains must be maintained simply because of what goes down a storm
line--leaves, sticks, sand, gravel, salt, de-icing compounds, road runoff, and
all other foreign matter is sent down to our environmentally sensitive
waterways.
-
Catch Basin Cleaning Program: Eighty percent of this foreign matter
penetrates the storm system and our environmentally sensitive waterways
initially through the catch basins. If these catch basins are not kept clean,
the foreign matter is then washed into the storm mains. With a cleaning
program in place, it is much easier and cheaper to stop this matter before it
enters your storm system. If the catch basins are not maintained, then the matter
that the catch basins are supposed to stop will enter the storm mains and the environment.
- Storm Main Maintenance: These storm lines carry all of the road runoff,
excess groundwater, and roof drains to our waterways. If these lines are not
maintained, the outcome could be catastrophic as to floods, roads washing out,
and residential and commercial flooding.
- Root Problems: A lot of the existing storm sewers that were installed
before 1980 were done so to not only carry runoff water away, but also at
certain times, collect groundwater. This enables root infiltration into storm
mains. Roots love this environment, and also thrive to the point of
blocking the storm mains and service lines. These roots also block and hold
foreign materials. Once established, they grow very rapidly.
Please enquire as to the different ways of managing these roots once they
infiltrate your system.
- CSP Pipe Problems: This type of pipe is known to erode quite substantially
if left to build up with foreign material or matter. The catch basins cannot
stop all of the salt and chemicals from entering the storm system. If these
chemicals are allowed to build up in metal pipe that is not coated, the pipe
will erode very quickly.
- Cross Connections: These have always been a problem in storm sewer systems
simply because it allows sanitary effluent into our environmentally sensitive
waterways. Dye testing and smoke testing are a very simple solution to these
problems.
