  • Smoke Testing:

Smoke testing involves forcing smoke-filled air through a sewer line. The smoke under pressure, will fill the main line plus any connection lines or leaks. Only enough force to overcome atmospheric pressure is required, thus forcing the smoke through any connecting lines, and will come out at any opening.

Smoke testing can be used for locating illegal connections, cross connections or leaks in a sealed system. Illegal or improper cross connections can add up to trouble in sanitary or storm sewers. Leaks can be found using smoke testing simply by filling the pipeline with smoke, for long enough, that the smoke saturates the ground and comes to the surface.  As long as openings exist for the smoke to follow, smoke tests are effective, regardless of surface type, soil type and depth of the lines.

.

Pipe-Eye Video uses safe environmentally-friendly smoke  to conduct all of our testing.  This smoke does not require flame or heat, and is non-toxic.

  • Dye Testing: Dye testing is used to locate active service connections in main lines and/or trace existing lines. For example, you have a cross connection in a sewer or storm drain coming from a multiplex, you are able to put dye in each unit via the toilet or sink, and eliminate who is connected to what.

Dye testing is also used to determine which lines are leaking liquids simply by adding different colors of dye to different lines. It is a very environmentally safe, cost-effective simple way of locating or determining existing problems.
